When you make a bet at poker, it is important to make a verbal announcement as to your intentions. You must state your action clearly and then follow it. This is to stop players fumbling with their chips and watching for a reaction from the other players. You can play with your chips, count them out, flip them in the air but, once you have moved some chips onto the surface of the table away from your own pile, they are deemed to have been bet. You may not take them away again, nor add any more to the pile. For this reason, if you say, “Raise”, you can still take your time to decide exactly how much you want to bet. Because you have announced a raise, your bet will be accepted.

Showdowns
When all five community cards have been dealt and there are still two or more players in the hand then, unless one player makes a bet which no one else calls (in which case he wins without having to show his cards), there will be some kind of showdown.

If one player makes a bet and the other player calls, then the caller has paid to see the first player’s cards. The first player must turn over both his cards for everyone to see. If he has the best hand, the second player usually just throws away his cards and the first player collects the chips.

If, alternatively, the second player has the better hand, he then shows both his cards to everyone and gathers up the pot.

On some occasions, the remaining players all check (no one makes a bet). In this situation, all players should turn over their hands simultaneously. The winner (or winners) is established, and he takes down the money, as we say in poker to mean gathering in the chips from a winning pot.

Sometimes, in this situation, a player hangs back to see who has what. If he then waits until another player thinks he has won the pot and belatedly turns over his hand and claims he is the winner, this is known as slow-rolling his hand. It is bad form to do this. If you have won, or think you have won, turn over your cards quickly and claim.
