Casino Expressions

  • Action - This is the amount of money wagered or 'put into action' by a player during the entire playing session.
  • Bankroll - This is the total gambling money a player has available.
  • Barred - This is the same as being Banned. It means that the player is no longer allowed to enter the casino premises for an indefinite time period.
  • Buck - This is slang for a $100 wager.
  • Betting limits - This is the maximum and minimum amounts that a player can bet on a specific table game.
  • Bump - Slang meaning to raise.
  • Burn Cards - The process of removing cards from the top of the deck, for them not to be dealt, instead they are placed in the discard tray after a shuffle and cut.
  • Capping - In full referred to as capping of bets. This involves placing extra chips on top of an initial bet after the deal has already begun. It is a very serious form of cheating by a player and will not be looked upon kindly by the Casinos ever vigilant eyes.
  • Card Counting - This is mostly found in blackjack game. It is the process of recording (in memory) the cards which have already been dealt (usually high cards) so as to form a conditional probability advantage on the cards which are left in the shoe against the dealer. In reality quite apart from the fact that you need a phenomenal memory to do this well it has been rendered useless by the introduction of auto-shuffling shoes by the casinos which continually reshuffle the dealt cards back into the shoe.
  • Card Sharp - A player who is considered an expert at cards.
  • Cashier’s Cage - The desk where the player can cash in the chips.
  • Cold - Slang for a player who is on a losing streak, or a slot machine that is being unusually mean at paying out.
  • Colour up - This is where a player exchanges smaller denomination chips for larger denomination chips, as a result of having won a few bets.
  • Comps - These are complimentary gifts which the casino gives out, usually to higher stakes players to entice them to gamble at their casinos, they typically include meals, beverages and even free hotel rooms.
  • Croupier - This is the French word for the Dealer, typically used in Roulette and Baccarat.
  • Dime Bet - This is a $1000 bet.
  • Dollar Bet -Same as a 'Buck' bet it is for $100.
  • Down Card - A card dealt face down, found amongst others in Blackjack.
  • Edge - An advantage of one player over another or the casino over all players.
  • Eye in the Sky - These are the numerous video surveillance cameras in use by the casinos to catch out cheating players performing for example 'Capping'.
  • Face Cards - Theses are King, Queen and Jack of any suit.
  • Flat Top - Slot machine whose jackpot is always set at a fixed amount, as opposed to a progressive slot machine.
  • High Roller - This is the type of a person who will ordinarily attract the most generous comps, the reason being that they are the player who bets big and therefore from the Casino's point of view, and certainly hope, will also typically loose big.
  • Hot - The opposite of a 'cold' player, i.e. a player on a winning streak, or a slot machine that is being unusually generous in its payout frequency.
  • House Edge - This is the seldom publicised advantage that all casinos build into their games, some more than others. It is gained by paying out slightly less than the mathematical odds would suggest.
  • Load up - Refers purely to slot machines and involves playing the maximum number of coins per spin which a slot machine or video game will allow you to do.
  • Loose - Similar to hot this refers to Slot machines/Video games which have a generous payout.
  • Mechanic - This is slang and refers to a dealer who cheats.
  • Odds - Ratio of mathematical probabilities.
  • Overlay - This is a good bet in which the player has the edge over the casino.
  • Payoff - The payback or return which the player gets for their bet.
  • Pit - This refers to an area of a casino where their is a cluster of table games like Blackjack, Roulette, Craps etc, and is the central area between these tables which is restricted to the dealers and other casino personnel like the Pit boss
  • Pit Boss - As mentioned above the Pit boss will supervise a specific cluster of tables, he will amongst other things be looking out for crooked players and dealers.
  • Press a Bet - Usually done by a 'Hot' player it involved adding the winnings of one bet to the next one.
  • Probability - Is a mathematical calculation to establish the likelihood of certain events/situations occurring.
  • Push - terminology in Blackjack referring to a tied hand between a player and the dealer, in which the player is returned the original bet.
  • Rated - This is at the discretion of the Casino and occurs if the Casino considers a player’s skill level is above average or even on a professional level. The rating for a player can be stored on a computer and referred to by the pit.
  • RFB - Refers to a comp package of free Food, Room and Beverages.
  • Session - The time a player is betting at any gambling game.
  • Shoe - This is a device, used for holding, shuffling and dispensing playing cards to be dealt by the dealer.
  • Shuffle Up - This is the premature shuffling of playing cards by a dealer.
  • Spooking - A method employed in blackjack games where an accomplice stands behind the dealer to try and peak at the hole card, which is the one dealt face down, and then covertly inform this information to his playing partner. It goes without saying that this is an illegal form of cheating.
  • Tell Play - A legal but hit and miss method of gaining an advantage whereby a player will try and determine the strength of the dealers hand by observing the dealer's body language.
  • Toke - Again usually performed by a 'Hot' player this refers to a tip given to the dealer by the player in the form of money or chips.
  • Underlay - refers to a bad or unfavourable bet.
  • Vigorish - (Also abbreviated Vig.) Refers to the inbuilt edge or commission taken by the casino.
  • VIP - Literally a 'Very Important Person'. In the Casino world this usually means a big better / high roller.
  • Upcard - This is the dealer’s card in blackjack which is dealt face up.
